'Ooh-La-La' New Summer Exhibition - December 2012 'Ooh-La-La' New Summer Exhibition - December 2012

'2 Degrees of Separation' at Reflections Art Gallery -  March 2013

Is it possible that within New Zealand any given two people can be connected as “friends of friends”?

2 degrees of Separationrefers to the theory by Frigyes Karinthy who suggests that worldwide a theory of six degrees of separation exists.  It is argued that within New Zealand only two degrees in a chain link of relationship exists.  This exhibition brings together two Nelson artists; Lloyd Harwood and Rachel Kearney - each with different backgrounds, aesthetic and media yet both intuitively responding to the familiar in the same place and time.

Harwood’s new work is lively and uninhibited, at once both loud yet quiet, simple yet strong. Perhaps in reflection of a New Zealander whose earlier life was abroad in London this body of paintings and objects sees contrasts in approaches rather than similarities.

Kearney returns to art making in tandem with parenting, following on from a career in law.  Her work examines her current position, revisiting the joy of childhood with playful experimentation of materials and yet is seen through the eyes of a mother; repetitious, yearning, fragile, constant and dependant

'Tangaroa, Papatuanuku, Ranginui - Water, Earth & Sky' at Reflections Art Gallery -  February 2013

Tangaroa, Papatuanuku, Ranginui – Water, Earth & Sky brings together three prominent artists from the Nelson region; Michelle Bellamy, Robin Slow and Brian Strong, each characterising unique aspects of the New Zealand environment and together lending a strong sense of place.

Bellamy is an accomplished photorealist painter whose sharply detailed paintings capture the brightness and purity of New Zealand light.  Over a year ago she moved from the North Island back to her hometown of Nelson.  Now living near the coastline her new works explore aspects of water – transparency, movement, reflection and colour

Slow’s latest works come together as ‘connections’ and the manifestation of these connections between Tangaroa, Papatuanuku and Ranginui, (Water, Earth & Sky).  “These connections can be seen in a spiritual or physical sense, or as a sense of place: our turangawaiwai, our place to stand.  The individual works belong to this place and are painted using kokowai, the stone from the area; the metallic leaf references the changes, and the works represent stories – both past and present – which are specific to Mohua (Golden Bay) but universal in theme”.

Strong’s distinctive compositions depict New Zealand coastal landscapes, often yielding several images layered within the space of the painting. “My contribution towards this show is a series of paintings based on skies, with water and the land,” he says. “The concentration will be on ‘the essence of light’ with elements of the treaty of Waitangi, which gives New Zealand its unique historic identity, underpinning the content.”

'Summer Show' at Reflections Art Gallery - December 2012

Reflections Art Gallery’s Summer Show brings together a variety of paintings, glass and ceramics by a selection of artists from home and away, North and South.

Colourful glass stories from the unlimited imagination of Golden Bay artist Aralyn Doiron feature in the foyer gallery space accompanied by adorable cast glass bunnies from Sharon Hall (Paekakariki) and a flutter of glass birds by design team Luke Jacomb and Katherine Rutecki (Auckland).

Award winning local landscapes ‘from the inside out ‘by Jane Nicol sit alongside work from her ‘the land remembers’ series; thoughtful, cleverly layered images merging portraiture with scenery.

Energetic figurative paintings by Waiheke artist Ilya Volykhine contrast with the quiet layered anonymous crowds of Ruby Bay’s Lisa Chandler and the peaceful serenity of Tianshi’ by Auckland artist Dalene Meiring.

Delightful differences in texture abound; Corroded by Nelson’s Tania Bostock appears flaking, rusted and time weathered, Opotiki artist Fiona Kerr Gedson contributes feathered Pou Whirinaki’ framed pillars of iridescent pattern.

Upper Moutere ceramicist Katie Gold shows a selection of large sculptural vessels alongside a grouping of smaller wall bowls providing vibrant colour, relief pattern and iconic form.

'Colour Girls' Exhibition at Reflections Art Gallery - November 2012

Close your eyes and think of a colour that signifies Nelson... undeniably it has to be blue, vast sinking contemplative shades of azure, indigo, cornflower, sky and aqua in all tones and moods.

Colour Girls carries this theme of blue in vibrant paintings and ceramics showing Nelson’s Candy Clarke, Kathryn Furniss, Marilyn Andrews and Katie Gold alongside Bay of Plenty artist Talulah Belle Lautrec-Nunes.

Candy Clarke presents two selections of paintings in response to the Colour Girls title. The first is inspired by the blue and white ornamentation of Delft pottery, the second is a clamour of glamour; 1960’s pop inspired multiple pieced works, an eclectic ‘Holy Trinity’ gathering of girls, handbags and shoes.

Kathryn Furniss captures glimpses of the New Zealand landscape, objects and native flora and fauna in layered, stylised motifs. Her new works also see a return to interiors, still life captured with a uniquely Pacific flavour.

Marilyn Andrews small and large scale textured paintings celebrate spring, abundance and the joy of life in vivacious colour.

Katie Gold’s ceramics take on a romantic twist, inspired by her own springtime garden her vessels feature classic romantic images from bygone days; a little frou-frou to delight and charm.

Talulah Belle Lautrec-Nunes is an expressionist painter who applies vibrant colour with palette knife in a semi abstract way to capture wonderfully energetic landscapes and still life.

Colour Girls can be viewed daily 10am-5pm, from 13 November until December 15.

'LOOP' Exhibition at Reflections Art Gallery - October 2012

LOOP

 n. 1. A shape produced by a curve that bends around and crosses itself

v. 2. Form (something) into a loop or loops; encircle

LOOP gathers together eight local artists who stitch, construct, weave, print, or work with circular rhythms and patterns in interesting ways.

Katie Denley, Caroline della Porta, Bridget Sanders and Doti Young combine drawing with fabric and stitch in colourful textured pieces that reflect on the past and present.  Photographer Rosemary Horn embroiders sketchbook details onto images captured on travels to Europe while small portraits by Greta Tapper become portals into the imagined life of ‘Widgets’; painted ragdolls she describes as ‘sinister cute’.  Printmaker Clare Makwana explores adornment and surface decoration with layered pattern and Sarah Hornibrooke creates 3-dimentional drawings of animal forms from looped wire.

LOOP presents a selection of contemporary artworks that sit within a textile framework and blur the boundaries between art, craft and design.

'AIR SOULS' Exhibition - September 2012

Bring your sense of humour along to Air Souls, a show that promises to be full of airborne surprises.
A familiar duo, Jo Tyson and Deb Walsh are joined by local ceramicist Mike Perry to bring an eclectic selection of sculpture, ceramics and mixed media paintings to Reflections Art Gallery.

Cool, Calm & Collected Exhibition at Reflections Art Gallery - July 2012

In the face of earthquakes, hard frosts, cabin fever and gloomy global forecasts, it’s vital to stay Cool, Calm & Collected. New works by John Burns, Jacqui Gibbs Chamberlain and Candy Clarke defy the somber grey of winter in a show pulsing with uninhibited vigor and colour.

John Burns hails from either Christchurch or Otira, or as he calls it ‘The Coast’.  A painter for over 25 years, he has developed his own themes and unique figurative style.  Right now it is his ‘Ladies’ that beckon to be brought to light, on these John explains, ‘These beautiful living creatures are of their own making . . . they choose their look and their thoughts at this time. They don’t share their concerns with others as to their beauty, their choice is wholly their own . . . ‘.  Witty, intensely vibrant and a little out-there crazy these ladies are dancing to their own beat.

Jacqui Gibbs Chamberlain lives and paints from an isolated farm on Banks Peninsula.  Her instinctual figurative paintings radiate life, energy and movement.  These latest works mingle ideas around instinctual responses in humans and animals, inspired by recent travel and the Canterbury earthquakes. Lyrical, painterly dreamlike images are complement by a deers head sculpted from resin and embedded with broken glass recycled from quake damaged relics.

Candy Clarke needs little introduction to the local Nelson arts community.  Her signature medium - reverse painted Perspex artworks are intuitively playful and refreshingly honest in their intent.  This current selection of works respond to the pond water viewed from Reflections gallery, balancing cool calming images with hot and complimentary colours in a variety of shaped formats.  She says, ‘I am using text to create uncertain landscapes where the words appear to sit up from the picture plane and sometimes seem to be swallowed or slowly sinking.’  Bold animated images create the illusion of a new painterly world trapped beneath a screen, hinting at the plethora of touch screens and TV monitors infiltrating our man made environment.

Richmond Picture Framers floated the idea for the show after noticing how little exposure there is for children’s artwork in Nelson.

Throughout May over 400 children entered artwork for the exhibition. Their paintings, collages and drawings poured in from all over the Region, including Golden Bay, Motueka and Tapawera. Local schools also got on board and offered children extra opportunities to be creative.

Many thanks to Lloyd Harwood, Anne Rush and Steve Fullmer for giving their expertise and time to sift through all the artworks and arrive at the 31 framed pieces on display in the gallery. Selecting so few artworks from so many was an extremely hard task as each could be seen and enjoyed on many different levels.

My Kid Could Do That! , results in an affordable exhibition packed with spontaneity, energy, humour, thoughtfulness and skill. Entry to Reflections Art Gallery is free and can be viewed daily 10am-5pm from 1 July to 21 July 2012; coinciding with the school holiday period.

Our inaugural ‘Artist of the Month’ is the extremely talented mixed media artist, Jan Kerr.

A veteran WearableArt™ entrant with ten years of participation, numerous awards and even a special tribute of 8 garments in the 2005 show, Jan’s 2011 entry won the Weta Award, chosen by Sir Richard Taylor, co-founder and co-director of Weta Workshop. This special prize is awarded to the garment that best crosses the boundaries of film and WearableArt™.

Her winning garment, Hermecea is currently on display in the WearableArt™ Gallery. Nearly two years in the making, it is a melding of two intensely time consuming processes- paper mâche and intricately machine sewn fabric. Jan enjoys being able to re-process materials into something else and most of her work consists of cleverly transformed scraps converted to an entirely new form. Paper mâché is particularly favoured process and one she has mastered to create a diverse range of artworks, mostly inspired by nature with a touch of whimsy.

We currently have four of Jan’s works in our retail area, two are pictured on this page.

Artists include; Chris Finlayson, Philly Hall, Sarah Hornibrooke, Deb Price, Lynne Udell, Jo Campbell, Beate Franke, April Stevens, Jay Horton and Jocelyn Bacci.

New textile exhibition pottage ~ bricolage - February 2012

Suzie pottage ~ bricolage 14th Feb – 17th March 2012

Sharron Martin

An exhibition of contemporary eco dyed and printed garments designed to wrap around the body.

The early French meaning of pottage means from the pot, and the meaning of bricolage is to put together with whatever is at hand. Together, these words describe eco dyeing and printing by which gathered leaves and flowers are wrapped in fabric, boiled and steeped in metal pots until their colours and shapes are imprinted onto natural fibres.

Come and view these very special garments in our foyer gallery, these handcrafted wraps are one-off art pieces; naturally timeless.

The Boardroom Exhibition - July 2011

Jo Tyson is back at Reflections Art Gallery, this time transforming the gallery into a witty take on ‘The Boardroom’. Friends Caroline Marshall and Jane Ewers join her in a delightful mix of art, craft and design with an emphasis on the found object.

The Boardroom features and eccentric mix of Jo’s painted canvas ‘directors chairs’ that each appropriate a painting from eleven of her favourite artists. These gather around a colourful table resplendent with Jo’s secret staining recipe and a chandelier made from found beach glass, becoming the centrepiece of the exhibition. Her boardroom series of works are a quick witted selection of words and wood, watch out too for the ‘Financial Watchdog’ in his tweed jacket. Quirky wooden ships made from bits and bobs found on the beach hold familiar silhouettes and names seen in the Nelson harbour.

Caroline Marshall has transformed survey tripods into funky lamps and screen printed limited edition mats and cabinet.

Wood leather, silk, seeds, bark and even rabbit bones are things found on Jane Ewers rural property. These items are surprisingly disguised in the forms of creepy crawlies, weta’s, ant’s caterpillar’s and more.

The Boardroom exhibition runs until 7th of August come on in and view or visit our website www.wowcars.co.nz/reflectionsartgallery
