Studebaker was the oldest of all American vehicle manufacturers, having been established at South Bend, Indiana in 1852, well before the development of the internal combustion engine. Originally producers of horse drawn wagons, the company’s first cars in 1902 were electric powered and their first petrol cars two years later were built by outside suppliers, who merged with the company in 1910 to form the Studebaker Corporation.
Studebaker introduced the Big Six in 1920 as a more expensive companion to its smaller Light Six. In 1923, Studebaker became one of the first companies to make ‘all steel bodywork’ a standard feature.
